 Exquisite Expressions by Exrea

Devil's Dance

As the last glitter of twilight faded
Misty clouds left a full moon shaded
The dank night air pushed shadows about
An ill wind left me uneasy with doubt

On with my nocturnal trail I trudged
As songs of crickets and frogs the owls judged
Over the bridge and on to the park
Fireflies lit my way in the dark

The city cemetery lay just up ahead
Where crosses, flags, and flowers marked the dead
Glimmers of moonlight flickered on headstones
While the acrid air chilled me to my bones

Pausing a moment to God I prayed
My cares and fears upon Him were laid
A sudden shriek startled me to alert
I lifted my head so fast it hurt

Sulfur permeated the air all around
Smoke rose up right out of the ground
As clouds passed from the full moon's light
The view showed the Devil's delight

Circling a willow tree like unto a Maypole
He notched its bark for one more soul
Displaying pride for the souls he'd been reaping
T'is no wonder willow trees are weeping

Peering closer I strained to see
Just who it was to cause such glee
Satan turned his head with a jerk
Contorting his face to an evil smirk

Terrified by the thought that I was seen
Again I prayed to Jesus the Nazarene
Angel wings seemed to envelop me
In the mist of evil, I was fear free

Undetected I watched his vile display
Totally engrossed with his latest prey
He leaped atop his newest headstone
I swear I could hear the grave moan

He cackled and howled doing a demonic dance
His wicked cadence was a toxic trance
Then seared his thumbprint into the name
His final stroke to defile and defame

“It is finished” he mocked with a sneer
And then he was gone like a Jet Lear
The smoky haze lifted as I surveyed
So many souls there had been betrayed

Marked with thumbprints all a blazed
Left me feeling numb and dazed
My soul was grieved for their disgrace
Familiar names had lost their final race

Always politically correct in their speeches
But alas Liberals sucked ‘em dry like leeches
Folks didn't see through their disguise
Enticed by entitlements and other lies

Kinda like kudzu they were covered and consumed
While the kudzu thrived they were entombed
Entangled in their lies and deceit
T'was with power and greed they were replete

Satan had them all under his spell
Alluring them with riches straight into hell
My own conscience then was nudged
“Judge not, that ye be not judged”

Ashamed, I pray in repentance
For who am I to pass their sentence?
I know not the condition of their souls
Off in the distance, the church bell tolls

Pride always goes before a fall
It's the price for a ticket to Satan's ball
I turn away from the Devil's dance
The rhythm uses ‘Pride' to enhance

Satan forgot or just doesn't know
Jesus is the judge for the final show!
My nightly journey now comes to an end
Past the little church just round the bend

So I rejoice for souls ole Lucifer got wrong
I'm lifted up by the church choir's song
Darkness no longer engulfs my heart
I'll walk with Jesus and never depart!
